Pastor's Desk: 3rd Sunday of Easter

Posted 25th April 2009 in Pastor's Desk

Welcome friends as we gather for the Third Sunday of the Easter Season. My thanks go to Fr. Gary for keeping the seat warm in this space last Sunday while I was away. The next thing I want to do is to congratulate the girls & boys of Holy Trinity and Scoil Cholmcille Senior Schools who celebrated the beautiful Ceremony of Light at the Saturday Vigil Mass this weekend. At that Ceremony their parents/guardians handed the lighted candle to their child, just as it was handed to the parents & Godparents at their Baptism ceremony. This in no way signifies the end of the parents’ role in teaching their child about our Faith but it does recognise that the children are maturing and are ready to share in that responsibility of educating themselves about their Faith. We pray that they will keep that flame of faith alive in their hearts all their lives.

Confirmation Day
It is a wonderful week for the parish in this Easter Season as on Thursday next, 30th April at 11.00am the same boys & girls receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit in their lives in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Even more wonderful is that the Celebrant for the Mass will be none other than Bishop Dermot O’Mahony D.D. For the benefit of those who are recent arrivals in the parish, Bishop O’Mahony was the first priest assigned to Donaghmede over 35 years ago when he was Curate with Responsibility for the new developing area! I met with Bishop O’Mahony last week and he was reminiscing about the early days and the great camaraderie and community sprit that was the beginning of our parish. It was great to hear him speak about those pioneering days and to recognise so many of the names he mentioned of the parishioners who helped establish the foundations on which this community of Faith is built. It will be a real treat for the boys & girls to have Bishop O’Mahony celebrate their Confirmation but I also know that it will be a real treat for Bishop O’Mahony to be back among this great community.

Thursday Morning Mass
In order to prepare the church and set up the musicians/choir for the Confirmations, our morning Mass will be celebrated at 9.30am instead of the usual 10.00am that day. We would ask the regular attendees to please take note.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin
While I am speaking about bishops, I have asked Archbishop Diarmuid Martin D.D. to join us on May 27th at 11.00am for the official opening of the newly refurbished Fr. Collins Park and I am delighted to inform you that he has agreed! This is a wonderful occasion to remember our first Parish Priest, Fr. Joe Collins P.P. and the tremendous affection there is for him in this community. So please mark the day in your diary as it will be extra special having the Archbishop join us that day for the occasion. Have a great week!

Fr. Eoin
