Pastor's Desk: Third Sunday of Advent

Posted 11th December 2010 in Pastor's Desk

Greetings to you all as we gather to celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent. This Sunday has a special name and is called “Gaudete Sunday” as gaudete is Latin for “Rejoice”! So what are we meant to rejoice about? Well our first reading from Isaiah puts it beautifully when it says,

“Strengthen all weary hands,
steady all trembling knees
and say to all faint hearts,
‘Courage! Do not be afraid.

‘Look, your God is coming,
vengeance is coming,
the retribution of God;
he is coming to save you.’

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
the ears of the deaf unsealed,
then the lame shall leap like a deer
and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy;
for those Yahweh has ransomed shall return.”

We are also rejoicing because our time of preparation is drawing to a close, signified by the lighting of the third candle on our Advent Wreath. The Feast of Christ’s birth is very near indeed. I am sure, like myself, you are all busy with the practical arrangements for Christmas but we are asked to slow down for a moment and remind ourselves what is the cause of our joy; the birth of the Saviour. As a preparation for Christmas we like to avail of the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession and a reminder that we will celebrate our Parish Penitential Service on Tuesday, 21st December at 7.30pm and we look forward to helping the Lord strengthen weary hands. See you then.

Church Notices: 12th December 2010

  1. Many of you like to remember deceased relatives and friends at Mass on Christmas Day. There is a list in the Sacristy so please call in over the next couple of weeks to place family names of the dead on the list for the Mass of your choice. This year, the lists will be placed on the Altar instead of being read out.
  2. St. Doulagh’s Church annual service of Carols takes place on Sunday at 4.00pm. All are welcome.
  3. The Parish Advent Penance Service with individual confessions will take place on Tuesday week, 21st December at 7.30pm. There will be visiting confessors in attendance.
  4. Our Altar Flower Society is preparing for our Christmas celebrations. Donations towards the cost of the Altar Flowers for Christmas would be much appreciated. Gifts of red poinsettias and fresh flowers in red and white would also be gratefully accepted. These should be brought to the Sacristy next weekend.
  5. We will need the help of volunteers for the distribution of the parish newsletter, Trinity News, particularly to Clare Hall, Belmayne and Clongriffin. If you are in a position to help please call to the Sacristy after Mass.
  6. The Volunteers who signed up for the new choral choir are asked to come to an introductory rehearsal on Wednesday 22nd December at 7.30pm in the church. The new choir director is Lorraine Mack and we wish Lorraine and the choir every success.
  7. Holy Trinity School currently has a vacancy for the position of school cleaner. Please see the Church notice boards or click here for more details.
