Pastor's Desk: Feast of the Ascension

Posted 19th May 2012 in Pastor's Desk

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. We remember the day when Jesus concluded His earthly life and was reunited with His heavenly Father. How long this was after the resurrection we do not know for sure as each Gospel treats it differently but the effect was very real for the apostles. Jesus was now giving them a mission to continue and they would have to do it without His physical presence. That said, they would not be left alone either because the Advocate, the Holy Spirit would be given to them but the Spirit could only come when Jesus has left the apostles.

The striking thing in today’s readings for me is in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles where it says, “Now having met together, they asked him, ‘Lord, has the time come? Are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’”. Jesus must have been wondering where did He get this bunch from! How could they have been with Him all this time and still think it was all about political power, the establishment of a Kingdom of Israel, free from Roman domination. Jesus sends them out to establish a Kingdom alright but it is the Kingdom of God where the Gospels’ values are practised.

We are challenged to continue building that kingdom by our calling to be followers of Christ.
