Pastor's Desk: Fifth Sunday of Easter

Posted 5th May 2012 in Pastor's Desk

Welcome everyone to Mass on the first weekend in May. I hope the weather has improved for us by the time you read this!! Our Gospel today gives us the image of a vine. Jesus tells us that he is the vine and we are the branches. The image is a reminder that unless we are connected to Jesus, the Christ, the Saviour, we become lifeless. Likewise, we need the support of others to live out our faith. Ours is not an individualistic faith, it calls for community.

The Eucharistic Congress has the theme, “Communion with Christ and with one another”. That theme is very much echoed in today’s Gospel and reminds us we need the support of each other. When one branch becomes disease ridden it affects the whole vine; when one branch flourishes with life, the whole vine benefits. So it is with our community of faith. We gain from the sharing with others, new life is always to be welcomed.

Over the coming Sundays we will celebrate First Communion Masses when a new generation of boys and girls will be able to participate fully in our Eucharistic celebration, the Mass. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. The Masses begin next Sunday and are as follows:

Sunday May 13th 11.00am Mass
