Pastor's Desk: Fifth Sunday of Easter

Posted 17th May 2014 in Pastor's Desk

thewayWelcome everyone. The Gospel we proclaim today is for the most part familiar to us from funeral celebrations because Jesus promises His followers that there are many rooms in His Father’s house. But the key message for us in this Easter Season is that Jesus is “The Way, the Truth and the Life”.

Irish society today has a veneer of secularism. Looking at our television programmes and reading our papers and listening to our radio, one would be forgiven for thinking that faith and religious practice are non-existent. And it is true we can get caught up in that way of thinking ourselves. Yet, then we have experiences that totally counteract that hypothesis. For me, I’m thinking of the Novena of Grace we celebrated last year and this year. Each night we had a church full of people eager to hear about their Faith from someone else. Or the Adult Faith Development course we put on with Fr. Kieran O’Mahony on the scriptures, once again the number of people who rearranged their diaries so that they could follow his talks and learn about the Word of God and how it has been transmitted to us today was impressive. The greatest example of people yearning to learn more about their Faith and to celebrate it was the Eucharistic Congress in 2012. There we saw literally thousands of people from all over Ireland and other parts of the world immerse themselves in lectures about what this Faith of ours is all about.

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life for many millions of people. The challenge is for all of us to follow further in His way; learn more of His truth; and enjoy the fullness of life only Jesus can offer us.
