Pastor's Desk: Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

‘This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him’

baptismWelcome back to you all as we begin a new week and settle into the New Year of 2015. We conclude the season of Christmas and begin the Season of “Ordinary Time” with the celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Today we remind ourselves of how this was such a pivotal experience in Jesus’ life: prior to his baptism in the River Jordan by his cousin John the Baptist, we know very little of Jesus’ life, but from this moment forward he begins his public ministry of preaching the Gospel or Good News. It starts out as a solitary journey but quickly a community forms around Jesus and that continues to be the case up to our own time.

Our own baptism should be a pivotal event in our lives. We might not remember anything about it but the fact that it happened at all means we are members of the Body of Christ, the Church, and have rights and responsibilities. Only within the community of faith can we exercise those rights and responsibilities. Our parish is very lucky to have so many committed members who take part in our liturgies each week and do so much voluntary work for our parish; without you we would have a very poor sense of what church is. Let us celebrate this great Feast day by renewing our baptismal promises and refreshing ourselves in the waters of salvation.
