Pastors Desk: Passion (Palm) Sunday / A
Pastor’s Desk 9th April 2017 - Palm (Passion) Sunday / A
Having journeyed through the holy season of Lent, it’s on today, Passion Sunday or Palm Sunday, that we finally enter Holy Week and welcome Jesus into our lives in a special way. Over these days, we ask him to allow us to share in his passion, death and resurrection. Our liturgies in the coming week will afford us the opportunity to experience in our lives today what Jesus went through then. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on our own personal ‘crosses’ and difficulties that life sends our way from time to time. We ask God to help us to carry those crosses with great dignity and never lose heart that he is always there with us during our suffering and pain.
Before his triumphant resurrection, Jesus will have to endure great suffering, ending with his death on the cross. He will be betrayed by Judas, denied by Peter, mocked by others and forsaken by the apostles. He must surely have felt a sense of abandonment by those he loved. It is his mother Mary who stands alone at the foot of the cross, faithful to the end.
At our celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Good Friday we are actively allowing Jesus to forgive our sins, heal the wounds caused in us by our sins and the sins of others, and transform us completely into the image and likeness of God.
‘Come to me all you who labour and I will give you rest’.
