Pastor’s Desk 10th March 2019 - First Sunday of Lent/C

1st-sunday-of-lent2As we begin our Lenten journey our thoughts turn towards what we might either give up or do during the season. We start off with good intentions but often fall soon at the first hurdle. We are tempted in so many ways to abandon our quest.

In today’s gospel we hear how the Devil tried to tempt Jesus as he fasted for 40 days and nights in the wilderness. Jesus rebukes him with the words ‘You must not put the Lord your God to the test’ and ‘the Devil left to return at another time’ we are told.

Life is full of temptations for us too. One of the things that God gives us is free will. In other words, the ability to freely make choices for ourselves. Each day in many different situations we are forced into making decisions. They can range from the simple ‘will I have that piece of cake or another biscuit’ or the more serious one to begin a new friendship or relationship that we know is not going to have a positive outcome from the outset. Very often the choices we make are the ones that fulfil a need here and now without thinking ahead to the future and how they might affect not just me but those around me. The people who matter most in my life.

During this season of Lent, we pray that the Lord may open our hearts and minds so that we don’t always act on impulse but out of real discernment and with a clearer vision of what God is guiding us towards.
