Pastor’s Desk 5th January 2020 - Second Sunday of Christmas/A

new-yearToday we celebrate the second Sunday in the holy season of Christmas, the time of Christ.

Traditionally we always waited until after the Feast of the Epiphany or Nollaig na mBan before we removed the Christmas decorations in our homes. However, by today many Christmas trees have already been consigned to the shredder or banished into the attic until we decide to retrieve them for Christmas 2020. Each year Christmas decorations seem to appear long before the season has begun, only to disappear before the season is completely over. It seems that we are influenced more and more by the commercial calendar than the Christian one these days.

In today’s readings Paul and John try to help us to realign our focus for the year ahead by presenting us with the essentials of our faith, and they challenge us to have the courage to do the right thing, irrespective of others.
Saint Paul encourages those who are listening to focus their minds on the Lord Jesus and to live always through love in his presence. He prays that they gain a spirit of wisdom and a knowledge of God which in turn will influence their interior life and external behaviour. It will give them a clear sense of direction

In the gospel of St. John, he tells us that the One born of the Virgin is the creator of all that there is in the world, and that he is the true light to guide us on our way to eternal life and final happiness with God at the end of time, filled with grace and truth.
