Sacraments Update

Posted 2nd May 2021 in Ceremonies

As we prepare for the safe return to public worship on May 10th Archbishop Farrell has updated parishes on the celebration of the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation in 2021.

The public health advice is that ceremonies such as these should not take place at the time of resumption of public worship. For that reason, celebrations of these sacraments cannot take place until we are notified it is safe to do so.

The Archbishop believes that engagement with the public authorities will enable the position to be reviewed in due course over the coming weeks and months.

Given these circumstances he says it is appropriate and necessary that the celebration of First Reconciliation and Holy Communion for 2021 candidates should be deferred until the Autumn. We will follow this advice here in Holy Trinity and St. Paul’s.

The celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation for 2021 candidates may be possible over the summer months if we are notified by public health authorities and the Archbishop that it is safe and appropriate to do so. We will update you as soon as we know ourselves.

The Archbishop realises that this situation will be a cause of disappointment to many families but trusts that they will understand the rationale for this approach.

I trust this new information from the Archbishop provides greater clarity for all parents and children.

Kind regards,
Fr. Gerry
